Wine For the People

Wine For the People is back from winter break and ready to bring you more exciting wine events in 2012!  We’ll be kicking things off on Tuesday, January 24, 7 pm at Whip In, starting the year with an education of the French classics.  We’ll take a look at the most well-known regions of France and learn why they continue to keep the world’s top reputation for wine.  With our long-standing run at Whip In, a beacon of South Austin culture, we’re happy to announce the coming their new wine bar!  Check out the class on the 24th and find out more!

The February schedule will be up soon with a full schedule of classes, and don’t forget gift certificates make a great gift for Valentine’s Day!

We’ve made it to the end of another year, and we want to thank you for passing on the word of Wine For the People!  So come celebrate with us this month with two very special holiday tastings!

Cooler temperatures have arrived here in Austin, and we’re ready to pair wines for hearty dishes and warm conversation.  Come out with Wine for the People to find a perfect pair for your holiday meal or simply a reason to celebrate the new season.

You’re not going to want to miss our second class of the month, also at Whip In, featuring wines for celebrating!  Save this special Sunday, November 20 to experience Port and Sherry wines that are perfect for the holiday season!  This class will be a unique pleasure for the senses, we’ll be gathering at 6:30 pm with a welcome wine and the class will begin at 7 pm.  If the weather permits, this class will be held outside, so bring a jacket and get ready for wines that bring the warmth!

Wine For the People is honored to be co-hostomg The Silk Road: An Asian Epicurean Journey on October 15, 7 pm at the Mexican-American Cultural Center. Journey down the Silk Road for a unique culinary experience!  Join us for 7 food and wine pairings from local Asian restaurants, a Tea Bar sponsored by Zhi Teas, and a fabulous silent auction! All proceeds benefit SAHELI for Asian Families which provides critical services to domestic violence survivors.  This is an incredible opportunity to support the Austin community, stuff yourself silly, and do some good!  7 courses paired with 7 wines, including vegetarian options for only $65/person.

Tuesday, October 25, 7 pm brings us back to our series at the Whip In to taste full-bodied, sexy reds from all over the globe!  We’ll be welcoming the cooler temps with the big, powerful reds we’ve been missing through the summer.  Come out and enjoy wines to accompany a sweater!

As the harvest in Texas is nearing its end, join us through the month of September while we continue to celebrate the harvest season.  We’re hoping the more we talk about the Fall, the more it may start to feel like it.  Come out to take a break with us and sip on something to bring in cooler climes!

We’ll kick off the month at House Wine on Tuesday, Sept 6 at 7:30 pm featuring truly regional wines of Italy.  This is a unique experience to learn about wines from central and southern Italy that are rarely seen in the US.  The Martin-Ulisse family, a Texan family with Italian roots, imports these small farmer wines, and we’ll explore them with a special guest from the importer!  These classes sell out fast, so save seat now!

Next up we’ll be at Whip In, otherwise known as South Austin’s fortress of wine and beer love.  Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 pm will be a tribute to all wines French.  Most of us at some point have had a fear of French wines, or at least when listed on a menu.  Together we’ll change your hesitance to pure appreciation!  5 wines for only $15–plus a special guest!  French wine has never been so affordable!

We’re very excited to help introduce a new venue on Austin’s near south side.  Thrice Café is tucked into a cozy neighborhood street adjacent to Thai Fresh, a local, sustainably-driven Thai deli.  Thrice keeps up the locally-sourced foods with offerings such as fresh gourmet sandwiches, handmade baked goods and, of course, breakfast tacos.  Add to it an extensive wine list that offers everything by-the-glass, our mouths are watering!  Come out to enjoy a Mediterranean tour of the list and light bites on Thursday, Sept 15 at 7 pm!  You won’t want to miss it!

Finishing out the month will be our first-ever all-Texas wine class!  Nearly every class brings someone asking about what’s good in Texas these days, and we’re gonna’ show you.  This rapidly-growing industry is catching the attention of many, and we’ll help you understand and experience the best of the small-production handmade examples that you won’t find outside the wineries themselves!  Check it out at Whip In, Sept 27 at 7 pm- you’re gonna’ love it!

We’re doing our best to bring wine country to you!

Here in Texas the drought and intensely high temperatures have brought an early harvest for winemakers in the region.  Some of this year’s fruit was ready by early July!  The classes this month will be scaled back a bit to allow for winemaking duties, but to celebrate the harvest we’ll be featuring farmer wines.  From the smallest producers we’ll show how true artisinal wines taste, and how affordable they can be.  We’ll be throwing in a few gems from Texas as well, so don’t miss out!  Come out to join us at the Whip In, Tuesday August 9, 7 pm or Tuesday, August 23, 7 pm to explore some truly hand-made wines.

Our ongoing series at House Wine has been selling out early, so don’t miss your chance to experience the cozy comforts of this South Austin wine haven Tuesday, July 19 at 7:30 pm!  We’ll be digging into Pinot Noir from around the world.  Small producers both modern and traditional regions will impress with a wide range of expressions of this uniquely delicate variety.

Thanks to everyone that’s come out for some fun with us in the last month!  We’ve had amazing turn-outs at the classes and events!  June has arrived and we’ve got a month packed full of exciting happenings, so come on out and bring a friend!

Tuesday, May 10 at 7 pm we’ll be at the Whip In discovering selections from Southern France!  This region has an incredible array of wines that are wonderful food!  From rich, luscious reds to light- bodied porch sippers, these wines show amazing versatility.  Take this opportunity to learn more about this Mediterranean region with a rich history of winemaking.

Tuesday, May 24 at 7 pm we return to the Whip In for a chance to explore the most intriguing white wines in the world!  Torrontes, Viognier, Riesling, and more, these whites explode with aroma and complexity.  If you think whites have less to offer than reds, use this opportunity to learn more about some of the most complex examples!

Spring has sprung, and we’re so happy to be catching rays and dreaming of rosé!  With exciting new events and venues to explore, April is promising to be a wonderful way to get out and have some fun with Wine For the People!  There will be plenty of opportunities to find a new favorite wine, so come out and bring a friend!

April will kick-off with a unique event at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz.  Tuesday, April 5 at 7 pm will continue the  Ritz’ ‘Sommelier Series’ featuring Wine For the People.  Come out and join us for the romantic French film,’ Jules et Jim‘ perfectly paired with wine and cheese selections!  This is bound to be a serious treat of an evening!  Tickets are only $26, and can be purchased at the Alamo’s site here. Don’t wait too long, tickets will go fast!

Tuesday, April 12 at 7 pm, brings us back to the Whip In, our favorite eclectic South Austin spot! We’ll be enjoying Italian Reds for Summer, and this you won’t want to miss!  Red wines that will continue to please as it gets warmer, as well as make great pairs for all things from the grill.  Only $15!
