Rolling Out August

We’re hanging onto summer.  The long sunny days filled with lovely whites and rosés.  Ahhh, and Texas peaches.  Soon enough we’ll pull out our jackets and fill the decanters with brooding, contemplative reds, but until then here’s to living in the moment!

This week a year ago started a journey to Portugal for the harvest.  After nearly five months making wine in both the north and south, my passion for this region was solidified.  Together we will take the chance to explore one of the world’s richest historical wine regions that’s still virtually unknown. In my own study I’ve found it nearly impossible to find classes on Portugal, so I am proud to present one of few available in the U.S.  Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the unique wines and pictures from the harvest- you’ll be happy you did.  (Tuesday, August 10, 7 pm at  Whip In, 1950 South IH 35, Austin, 78704  512-442-5337 $20)

If hanging onto summer’s the plan, then we have some rosé to finish!  Back by popular demand, we will be celebrating the last days of summer with rosé, rosé, rosé!  Traditional dry rosés evoke images of lavender fields and Provence, so why not Texas? Let’s change it together at the Whip In, Tuesday August 24 at 7 pm. (1950 South IH 35, Austin, 78704, 512-442-5337 $15 or 2 for $20!!)

Classes at House Wine and Apothecary will be confirmed and posted within the week.

Jump Start Your July!

July crept up on us, and the class schedule is coming together!  We’ll be at all the regular places, and soon to be in some new!  With special guest appearances and wine giveaways, check out the classes this month to get your summer kicked into gear!  Check back for more July dates being added.

The forever-funky Whip In continues to be a great venue for classes, with it’s laid-back South Austin style and groovy digs.  Come by Tuesday, July 13 at 7 p.m. for our first Fundamentals 202 class!  By request we’re taking the opportunity to take your wine basics to the next level.  Covering some major regions and varieties, we’ll dive a little deeper and discover what makes them unique in the wine world.  Don’t worry,  plenty of enjoying is an essential part of the learning process!  (1950 South IH-35, Austin, 78704, 512-442-5337, $15)

Napa Valley, California

Tuesday, July 20, at 7:30 p.m. we’ll be kicking back at House Wine to re-discover California.  Whether it’s your first look or your first love, we’ll take the chance to focus on some small independent producers that are upholding the reputation of this incredible region.  Photos and stories from the ‘08 harvest in Napa will add to your experience, and if it’s your first time to visit House Wine, you’ll be thrilled to find it!  (408 Josephine St. Austin, 78704, 512-322-5210, $15)

Don’t even think we’d let the month escape without finding some reason to break out the bubbles!  We’re declaring a summer celebration, and bubbles there will be!  We’re inviting all friends for the first Wine For the People Social at the Whip In, July 27 from 7-10 p.m. Five specially-selected sparkling wines will be presented while we take the chance to meet and greet– and sip.  A perfect time to invite a friend (special price for plus one!) or meet a new one and check out upcoming classes!  (1950 South IH-35, Austin, 78704, 512-442-5337, $20, or 2 for $30!)

Apothecary Cafe and Wine Bar

We just can’t seem to get enough of  Apothecary Cafe and Wine Bar and we’re not the only ones.  This north central haunt is tearing up the scene with something to satisfy at any time of the day.  ‘Curing what ails you’ is their specialty, and Wine For the People will be there Saturday, July 31 at 5 pm to guide you through Italy’s lesser known wine regions .  They’ll hook you up with some great deals on special orders if you find something you like- just because they’re cool like that.  We recommend showing up with an appetite.
